phil the shill is done and should be posted in the downoad section of miami-vice.ws any day now. as always, i'm gonna go ahead and post the notes for it:

PHIL THE SHILL COMMENTS:

DRUMS: i guess you can tell i made some pretty rough samples from the dvd for the drums, but i think it turned out OK because the drums sound pretty rough on the actual cue. I sampled the shaker, kick, snare, and ride. I doctored them all a little with Sound Forge, then mixed some triton drums where appropriate. if you listen to the dvd closely, not all of the drums were processed the same. some are very dry in places. the toms were my old standby samples from "the talk". it is nearly impossible to nail these drums for me. they are some of jan's most interesting sounds from the whole series. i got close enough for me

DX7 GUITAR: this is called JAZZ GUIT2 on my DX7-IIFD. it's the same sound from "back in the world". a variant of it was used extensively throughout the third season of MV as well, as i have discussed in other threads. i ran it thru the flanger for this one. it sounded more like the cue this way than having the flanger in an effects loop. there is some chorus from Sonic Foundry (great software chorus on that program!!) and lots of reverb.

PADS: all the pads are from the Juno-106. they aren't quite as gritty sounding as the Memorymoog's, but they turned out OK.

BIG BASS: this thunder-like sound came from the Juno-106, also. I addes some triton Noisy stabber (my own tweaked version of the patch) to help get the snap on the attack. once again, not as good as the Memorymoog sound (nothing could be), but not bad.

The arrangement starts at the scene where they chase the mercedes, and then it moves to the fairgrounds scene at the end. i added some toms to make the transition, but these toms were actually in the cue when the mercedes driver says, "hey, why don't you go to a movie..." to switek at the gate.

post, pm, or email any questions. thanks for reading/listening!

Russian Love (vocal)
I wrote this peice of music for a documentary that didn't get to production.
So I decided to rework some of the sounds and add some vocals.

here is the link
http://www.fileqube.com/shared/xaBss155861

Running (2008)
Running was the very first track I posted on this site way back. I have done a whole new remix with entirely different sounds and a slightly different composition.

here is the link

yeah, you'll get great overtones from the flange into the distortion. the dirtier you want it, turn up the harmonics switch of the rockman. those flange waves will get really screaming then!

as for flanger settings, this is what it means to me:

the first two knobs (manual and width) are the play-makers.

when the first 2 knobs are at the 12 noonish area, you get a great chorus like sound. 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock (respectively) and it may sound even wider, or like a phaser, depending on your speed and regeneration settings. lots of experimentation with these knobs and you'll have your own ideas.

the speed knob stays in the lower ranges for me (at least on the MV sounds). you can get crazy with it though, if you want some outer space sounds.

the regen knob can help out with your distortion overtones, too. i keep in the lower ranges for clean stuff though. it can get a little spacey, too.
