Just found about this one....
Ironically, this song was not written in relation to current events. Here is the story:
In 1992, Tony-nominated lyric writer, Ellen Fitzhugh, and Jan Hammer, who wrote the music for "Miami Vice," were hired to write the songs for a projected "Star Wars" musical. The song, "Torture," was written to be sung by a robot under the direction of Darth Vader, but the musical went nowhere, and the song went nowhere with it.
In 1992, no one expected that a song entitled "Torture" would ever be timely. No one expected that we would have a vice-president who would frequently be likened to Darth Vader. No one expected torture to become standard operating procedure for the treatment of America's suspected enemies. And no one expected that after the torture administration left office, the next president, President Obama, would refuse to try the torturers for possible breaches of American law.
"Torture" is written from a gleeful, pro-torture point of view, as befits a song meant to be sung by a soulless robot of The Empire. But it is the position of Ms. Fitzhugh and Mr. Hammer that citizens of a democracy should not be soulless robots, and that a full public debate about torture (the practice, not the song) is an absolute necessity. With that in mind, they have released this song, in the hope that it will help to keep this issue before the public. |

Excuse me while I vomit.
Vice President Cheney was only likened to Darth Vader by his political opponents and those dumb enough not to see that it was just the typical demonization of conservatives. Maybe you didn't like his policies but if you can't mount much more criticism of him than "...he was likened to Darth Vader..." or any other baseless rumors or rhetoric maybe you need to ask yourself why you can't.
Furthermore, to say that "torture" is "...standard operating procedure for the treatment of America's suspected enemies..." is sickening. It disgusts me that absolute idiots would say such a thing with nothing more to base that assertion on than a bunch of anti-American brainwashing as perpetrated by American and international leftists. The closest thing that has come out in this regard is waterboarding which...granted...is tough treatment but falls far short of the beheadings, electric shock, eye gouging, use of power tools, kidnappings for ransom, and other forms of REAL torture that these Muslim lunatics have used on their prisoners who frequently end up dead (murdered on camera even) rather than being treated to the reasonable conditions such as what you find at Guantanamo Bay that includes ethnically sensitive meals, a Koran, a prayer mat, recognition under the Geneva Sanctions (which they DO NOT deserve as stateless non-uniformed enemy combatants), and also access to the US legal system (which they DO NOT deserve...again...as stateless non-uniformed enemy combatants).
There is nothing that I would like more than for all the brainwashed cattle who are anti-war, anti-Bush, anti-Cheney, anti-US military, anti-capitalist, pro-liberal, pro-Obama, etc. to have to live for a while in a country like Pakistan or Iran or socialist/communist/anti-capitalist Cuba where even basic civil liberties (such as speaking out against your own government) are denied at the point of a gun, at the not-so-tender mercies of rigged courts, by secret police, and...again...by REAL torture. Maybe then there would be some appreciation for the free society and the men and women who keep it that way that we have in the US.
This is a nice website. You're free to do what you want with it (again...because of those who you accuse of torture in the US defense establishment)...but you really should do yourself a favor and keep politics out of it. Music, musicians, and websites about them have been politicized way too much as it is.
